Nut by Nut, Step by Step
Nut by Nut, Step by Step is an intimate and uplifting sculpture depicting a small boy climbing a ladder a universal symbol of aspiration, determination, and the quiet courage of taking life one step at a time.
Shaun Gagg constructs the figure almost entirely from individually welded steel nuts, each one placed with intention to create the contours, posture, and personality of the child. The boy’s hair is crafted from old‑fashioned handmade nails, giving the piece a wonderfully tactile, expressive texture.
Size: (L) x (H) x (W) cm approx.
Medium: Welded Metal Sculpture
Craftsmanship
Every sculpture is hand‑built by Shaun, nut by nut, weld by weld. No two pieces are ever identical. The body is formed from solid steel nuts. Each nail forming the hair is welded individually. The ladder is constructed with the same meticulous attention to balance and proportion This is slow, deliberate craftsmanship the kind of making where the artist’s hand is visible in every joint and junction.
Finish & Patina
When the sculpture arrives, it comes in its raw steel finish, a bright silver tone that highlights the industrial beauty of the materials. Over time, something magical happens. Because the sculpture is made from steel, it naturally oxidises. Through the seasons sun, rain, frost, and warmth the surface gradually transforms. In the first months, subtle warm tones begin to appear. Over a couple of years, the sculpture develops a rich, even copper‑coloured patina. This finish resembles the celebrated Corten steel aesthetic: earthy, warm, and beautifully organic. This evolving surface is not a flaw, it is the artwork’s living character. The patina becomes part of the story, marking time and environment, making each sculpture truly unique.
